Connect ChatGPT / Codex

Follow these steps from the “Connect to a custom MCP” screen.

These steps are for a desktop app on the same Mac. Pasting this local configuration into ChatGPT in a web browser does not connect it.

1. Prepare FolderNode

Open FolderNode and enable Settings → MCP. Save one workflow to operate. If this is your first time, start with your first workflow.

The connection requires Node.js 20 or newer. If needed, install the macOS LTS version from the official Node.js site, then restart the AI app.

2. Fill in the connection fields

Open Settings → MCP servers → Add server in your AI app. Paste your configuration into the helper below to extract the values for your Mac.

Paste your configuration to see what goes where

In FolderNode, choose Settings → MCP → Copy connection settings, then paste the contents below.

Your configuration is processed in this browser only. It is not sent to a server or saved.

FieldWhat to enter
Namefoldernode
TypeSelect STDIO
Launch commandnode
ArgumentsPaste the long path from args into one field.
Environment variable: keyFOLDERNODE_MCP_SOCKET
Environment variable: valueThe path ending in bridge.sock inside env.
Environment variable passthroughLeave blank.
Working directoryLeave blank.

The Arguments field takes one path, not the entire JSON. Do not include surrounding quotes or square brackets. Keep a path containing spaces in a single field.

3. Save and connect

Click Save. Restart the AI app if needed and open a new chat. If “foldernode” appears in the tools list, the connection is ready. Keep FolderNode running.

4. Try a request

List my saved FolderNode workflows.

Use a workflow name from the list and ask for a preview first.

Preview “Convert images to WebP”. Tell me which files will be processed and where they will be saved.

Review the preview before asking it to run.

Run that preview and tell me the result when it finishes.

What is supported

Both Free and Pro can create, edit, inspect, preview and run workflows, check progress/results, and cancel. Free allows 10 files per run and 1 saved workflow. Give the AI absolute paths for your folders. A preview is valid for five minutes and can be run once.

Workflow names, file names, paths and results are shared with the connected AI. File contents are not returned. Connecting from a browser requires a separate connection setup.
